PDO Threads

PDO threads are now here!  This non-surgical facelift is the answer to loose and sagging skin particularly in the neck and jawline. The lower third of the face is challenging to treat effectively with botulinum toxin or injectable fillers. We can create an instant lift with these absorbable sutures inserted to make your body heal itself and produce collagen, naturally! Schedule your consultation today.

A beautiful and healthy face has a "V-shape."  With aging and gravity, this "V-shape" diminishes or inverts.
The idea behind the Nu-Mesh technique is to create a scaffolding in order to support the tissues and keep
them in the "V-shape."  While, the Nu-Lift technique delicately lifts the tissues and repositions the skin to
recreate the "V-shape" where it's been lost.
What Is It and How Does It Work?
PDO Stands for Polydioxanone.  What we use is a synthetic absorbable surgical suture composed of polydioxanone. PDO sutures are used to perform cardiothoracic surgery (such as open-heart surgery). It's one of the safest materials to be implanted in the body.  Using hypodermic needles preloaded with an absorbable PDO suture, we insert the needle into the skin and the thread stays beneath the skin when the needle is removed.  Your skin fully absorbs the thread within 4 to 6 months while your own collagen builds around the thread.  This procedure lifts and shapes without leaving you any scar tissue.

1. Controlled Healing:
In medical terms "Selective Inflammatory Response", is the principle behind a lot of aesthetic procedures (such as fractional laser,
chemical peels & microneedling ). Our skin is very good at repairing itself, and by inserting PDO threads we make it "heal" itself by creating new collagen, naturally!

Your skin gently reacts to the inserted threads

Yes, PDO is fully absorbable, but that doesn't mean your skin won't react to it. During the 4 - 6 months needed to fully absorb the PDO suture, your skin is also repairing itself by laying a matrix of collagen that results in bouncier tissue.  It's "controlled healing" happening underneath the skin!

2. Mesh or Lift:
There are two types of procedures with PDO Threads:

The first one (using smooth threads) consists of creating a mesh under the skin (i.e. 2 sutures inserted vertically & 3 sutures horizontally). Sort of like a #hashtag, or a net.  This mesh will serve as the foundation for our new collagen production. This technique tightens the skin
naturally from within.

The other technique (using barbed threads) is utilized to produce a more dramatic and immediate result. The PDO sutures have "barbs", which provide a grip underneath the skin. Sutures are inserted the same way, except they can be pulled in 1 or 2 directions, creating an instant skin
repositioning. Just like with the smooth threads, the skin will then build new collagen which secures the lift!

1. Preloaded Needle is inserted into the skin

2. PDO thread stays beneath the skin when removing the needle

What Can I Expect During My Treatment?
  1. We will consult with you to understand your areas of concern and answer all of your questions.  Together, we will determine an aesthetic treatment plan so you can get the best bang for your buck.   Depending on your anatomy, a series of 1-4 corrective PDO treatments may be needed to get you to a maintenance phase.  Although PDO threads can be inserted anywhere, areas where they are especially effective are the neck and jawline.  Usually best results are acheived when PDO threads are expertly combined with injectables and Total Facial Microneedling with Radiofrequency (RF) .
  2. If you can arrive with a clean face (free of lotions, serums and makeup), it is best or your face will be cleansed pre-treatment.
  3. Topical numbing cream and injectable lidocaine will be used to make you comfortable.  The treatment is reported to be very tolerable with very minimal social downtime.  The actual process takes about 30 minutes per area.
  4. Typically, you will see an instant lift with the Nu-Lift technique.  All treated areas will continue to lift and tighten as your collagen builds around the sutures over the next few months.
  5. You will have some initial swelling which will dissipate over the next 24 hours.  However, you may have soreness, especially when chewing, for 2-4 days post treatment.  You may also experience some occasional "zingers" or minor, quick flashes of nerve pain as the area heals.  You will also be instructed how to clean the treated areas post treatment.  Please avoid any dental work for 6 weeks post-treatment to avoid any infection.

How Long Do The Results Last?

Most patients will see the full results of their PDO treatment beginning about 4-6 weeks post procedure and continuing deep in the collagen for 6 months post treatment.  Over time, annual "booster" treatments, produce visibly tighter, bouncier, more lifted skin.
Preparing For Your Appointment

  • Water consumption is very important since the PDO threads react best to hydrated skin.  We recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces daily for 5 days prior to treatment.
  • After treatment, you will need to plan to avoid sweating, steam showers, hot tubs and swimming pools for 48 hours.  Dental work should not be performed 6 weeks post procedure.  There is a risk of infection that must be avoided.
  • Do not shave the area for 72 hours post treatment.

Cost varies based on areas treated and quantity of threads used.  As a medical aesthetics expert, Emily knows all of the thread types to customize your treatment.  She will help you get the best result for your specific needs.  The average corrective patient needs 1-2 treatments.  Then, annual or semi-annual maintenance is recommended.

Nu-Mesh Threads
  • $28 per thread.  A cross-hatching or #hashtag pattern is used to create a mesh under the skin.  An average of 10 threads per area (cheek or jawline, for example) are used.

Nu-Lift Threads
  • $138 per thread.  Longer threads are used to create a lift and instant skin repositioning.  An average of 6 threads are used for mid-face correction, for example.

Side Effects & Risks
As with any injectable procedure, there is risk of bruising, redness, swelling, pain at the site of treatment, and, in very rare cases, infection and/or damage to deeper structures. The treatments may involve risks that have been well documented and PDO threads for cosmetic purposes are not recommended for everyone.  If you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call to discuss.

To minimize the chance of the above side effects and risks, do not rub or massage the treated area unless instructed by Emily.  You should also avoid laying on your face at night or during a massage for 72 hours.  In addition, vigorous exercise that could cause sweating should be avoided for 48 hours post treatment.
